Lesson 5 guide

Use Shift without interrupting letter control

Capital letters combine two hands in one action. The opposite-hand Shift method lets the letter finger move naturally while the other hand provides the modifier.

Coordinate Shift and the letter

For a capital typed with the left hand, hold the right Shift key; for a capital typed with the right hand, hold the left Shift key. Press Shift just before the letter and release it immediately afterward.

Keep the other fingers close to home position. Avoid Caps Lock for isolated capitals because switching it on and off adds a separate state to monitor.

Practise names and sentence openings

Read the capital and its following lowercase letters as one word. This prevents a pause after every Shift movement and prepares the hand for names, places, titles, and sentence beginnings.

Common mistakes include releasing Shift too early, holding it through the next letter, or using the same hand for both keys. Slow the coordination rather than pressing Shift harder.

  • Use the Shift key opposite the typing hand.
  • Release Shift after the capital.
  • Return both hands to their anchors.
  • Practise capitals inside whole words.

Extend the skill carefully

After this lesson, use sentence practice where capitals appear naturally. Punctuation mode may also combine Shift with question marks, quotation marks, and other symbols.

Keyboard layouts differ, so learn the exact symbol positions on yours. The principle remains the same: combine hands without sacrificing the letter movement.

Frequently asked questions

Why use the opposite Shift key?

It avoids asking one hand to stretch for Shift and a letter at the same time.

When should I use Caps Lock?

It may suit long uppercase passages, but Shift is usually simpler for one capital.

Why do two letters become uppercase?

Shift is being released too late. Practise a clean press-letter-release sequence at a slower pace.
